Private tours to some of these inland sites may be arranged through Toadal Adventure, our tour operation. With a private tour the day is on your timing. This is especially good for families, small groups or those with special interests, such as birding.
You can’t come to Belize without a trip to one of the Cayes. Snorkel and dive trips take you to tropical islands sitting in turquoise water and surrounded by a virtual aquarium of colorful coral and fish.
For a bit more adventure a trip to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is the ticket. At Cockscomb you experience the lushness of the jungle, hiking trails surrounded by mystical plants and elusive animals. Cockscomb is a birders paradise, where close to a hundred species can be spotted in a day. A cool dip in the waterfalls, a fun trip down some natural waterslides and your thirst for adventure is quenched.
The history of Belize is rich with the Maya, who have lived in this region for over a thousand years. You can see this history in the Maya temples shrouded in the jungle. The ruins of Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun lie to our south. The cave at Blue Creek will take you to the Maya underworld. In southern Belize, you will find the modern Maya living their simple lives in small picturesque villages.
Looking for a little wildlife? Monkey River is the place to see howler monkeys, crocodiles and plenty of birds. These trips also offer the opportunity to spot manatee in the coastal waters between Placencia and Monkey River.
If you are looking for a more active tour, you might want to join Toadal Adventure for one of our multi-day sea kayak trips. For further details see www.toadaladventure.com
If you don’t feel like traveling by vehicle out of Placencia, you might rent a kayak to tour the lagoon. The lagoon is a tranquil mangrove haven for birds and manatee. Renting a bicycle you may take a ride up the peninsula to Seine Bight, a Garifuna village, where the culture is very different from that of Placencia. |
